According to the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA, 2018) Africa’s urban population is expected to double by 2050. This rapid growth puts pressure on cities, municipalities to deliver better utility services, reduce waste, and improve the quality of life of citizens. The smart cities initiatives, help to build digital infrastructure, with real life data for better planning, operational efficiencies, simplified system and platform for a smarter city management which appear to be strategic response for growing cities.

Current Market Status:

Smart city projects are being explored and deployed in many countries in Africa. Main components of these projects are intelligent street lighting, smart water and electricity networks, traffic management, and integrated command centers. Governments are increasingly open to public-private partnerships to scale these initiatives.

For example, in Kenya, the Konza Technopolis project—a flagship smart city initiative—is being developed through a PPP model. The Kenyan government collaborates with international technology companies and private investors to build ICT infrastructure, energy-efficient utilities, and smart services. The project is supported by the Ministry of ICT and funded in part by the African Development Bank (AfDB) and other private sector partners.
